State Senate 20

Senator
Kurt Schrader, D-Canby
Interim email: sen.kurtschrader@state.or.us
Website: http://www.leg.state.or.us/schrader
District: Central Clackamas County, including
Oregon City, Johnson City, Canby and parts of Milwaukie and Gladstone,
and a good deal of rural country to the southeast. Although substantial
portions are turning into Portland bedroom communities, the overall
feel of much of this area still is rural..

Background: Not much about this territory
looks like Democratic territory; Republicans theoretically ought
to have this Senate seat. They do have one of the House seats here
House Majotity Leader Wayne Scott has it, and seems well
entrenched but Democrat Dave Hunt has twice won the other,
narrowly. Schrader's strength, however, apparently is at least considerably
personal. A veterinarian (almost always a good political occupation)
from Canby (and therefore with some personal base in a Republican
community), he has gotten strong reviews as one of the best
and brightest representatives (as he was here formerly) and
senators. That seems to have sunk in. He won the Senate seat in
2002 with 55.6% in a tough district.
Bottom line: Rather like Morse in Albany/Corvallis,
Schrader seems to have strength apart from partisanship. He will
be tough to take out with any Republican short of, say, Wayne Scott
(his budget committee co-chair in 2005).
