NORTHWEST ELECTION PREVIEW 2006

main election preview page

State Senate 4

BatesSenator Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene

Interim email: sen.floydprozanski@state.or.us
Website: http://www.leg.state.or.us/prozanski

District: Southern, eastern Lane County and northern Douglas County; communities include Blue River, Cottage Grove, Drain, Elkton, Eugene, Glide, Lowell, Oakland, Oakridge, Sutherlin, Veneta, Vida, Westfir, and Yoncalla. The small part of the district including the University of Oregon is critical .

district 4

Background: You might have figured Democratic union guy Tony Corcoran to be the ideal match for this district, with its slice of southern Eugene (including some of the UO area) countered to an extent by a large rural territory – the kind of timber country where Democrats (at least those not tightly connected to labor) have had an increasingly hard time. Corcoran in fact did very well here and probably would have been re-elected indefinitely had he not accepted an appointment to the Kulongoski administration. Eugene attorney Prozanski might be expected to do well outside Eugene.

In fact, his Douglas County numbers are not impressive – he loses there (as Corcoran often did). But his Lane numbers are so strong – reflecting his landslides in his old Lane House district – that he seems all but untouchable. And most of the votes are in Lane.

Bottom line: No candidates filed, but Prozanski seems likely to run. If he does, he is strongly likely to win. Democrats in any event have a strong edge here.
