Take a look at Cassia and Minidoka Counties in southern Idaho. They joined together to build a joint jail and a joint juvenile detention center with video arraignment equipment connecting both facilities to the courts in both counties. The system has been working well for over 20 years.

Great letter, Betty. I do wish our legislature put a higher value on thoroughness, honesty, and prudence than they do on their posturing. A resolution has only the power of its persuasion (and what executive response might pass legal muster), which leaves one to wonder who the legislators voting for this think they might be persuading.

In my youth my family and I traveled toll roads in the midwest, and they always seemed weird and unamerican. Freeways were supposed to be free, after all. Public education and prisons belong on your list of things for which corporate outsourcing is a wrong turn.

Carlson, you are mistaken. Although used on their website, the word “flagship” was never in the U OF I mission statement, let alone “stripped with malice aforthought by Bob Kustra.” When the three universities were asked by the SBOE to propose modifications to their mission statements, U of I petitioned to add the word “flagship”. The Board unanimously denied the request. Incidentally, University of Michigan used to have the word “flagship” in their mission statement. In that case the Michigan Board of Regents did, in fact, take it out.
